The Paloma

Can you believe May is finally here?! 2017 is going by so fast I can’t believe it. But the first week of May means it’s time for my favorite drinking holiday: CINCO DE MAYO 🇲🇽 🇲🇽 🇲🇽

Before moving forward with a tequila infused cocktail recipe, I want to acknowledge that Cinco de Mayo is actually commemorates Mexico’s victory against the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. As such, there are ways to respectfully celebrate which do not include appropriating Mexican culture or embarrassing yourself and others. Please celebrate responsibly!

This week I’ll be debuting 3 cocktail recipes to help us celebrate the holiday! Up first, we have the Paloma, allegedly the most popular tequila-based cocktail in Mexico. Although the historical origin of this cocktail is contested, the recipe is not!

  1. Mix 1 part tequila with 2 parts grapefruit soda in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds.
  2. Pour over ice and serve.
Recipe Notes

Jarritos is usually found in the International aisle at the grocery store. If you can't find Toronja (grapefruit) substitute for Fresca, Squirt or Izze.
You can also DIY grapefruit soda using grapefruit juice, club soda and simple syrup.

For a stronger cocktail, mix equal parts tequila and grapefruit soda.

These are super simple and easy to make for your Cinco de Mayo party. They’re even a good thing to order while you’re out celebrating to take a break from all the margaritas.
